Ben Walmsley, a documentary landscape photographer based in the Southwest of England, focuses on environments that have changed recently or are changing. With a background in the Scout movement, his work involves travelling to rural locations and looking at spaces that are hidden or often ignored. More recently, Ben has moved into working around environmental issues facing the world right now.
Working with large format film and medium format digital, Ben has a slow approach to photographing the landscape. He aims to have a better connection to the landscape by spending more time in the space. To gain a better understanding of the space he is photographing, Ben revisits spaces repeatedly while also researching deeply into the subject he is photographing. Speaking to professionals within the field he is photographing, and underpinning the photographs with information about the topic means that Ben can create well informed and powerful images.
