In 2023, storm overflow pipes were responsible for 3.6 million hours of raw sewage being pumped into our UK waterways, with more happening every day. The Croal Irwell was responsible for 11,974 hours, with 95 spills per mile. Water companies blame this high spill count on increased rainfall, but what are they doing to improve this?
Above, below, within, follows the river Irwell and tributaries that flow into it, tracing the points of biggest overflow and photographing the impact this has on the waterways. While investigating the industrial landscape that follows the river, this body of work looks to educate the public on the issues that face the waterways and all that use them.
